Timber from the San Bartolome de Tirajana heights, within the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve, used to be involved in the charcoal production, so Tunte inhabitants accounted with entire families working in this activity. Wood from almond trees and pine trees were burnt in pits dug specifically for charcoal making purposes. The burning process used to last for several days if it came to tree branches, or even almost for a month when it was made out of large logs burnt in low oxygen levels conditions at high temperature to avoid the complete waste of the wood. This activity is still carried out, now using iron pots and at a lesser scale, in the Biosphere Reserve area in the island, specifically in the Tejeda municipality.
