The abrupt orography of the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve area and the spreading of the little groups of houses made difficult the carrying of the dead from the place where the death occurred to the parish graveyards. The ‘dead resting places' used to be designated areas in the middle of the longest paths where the carriers would rest. The coffins, of communal use, were kept in caves or wrapped in coats to avoid the rotting of the material so these could be reused. Some examples are ‘El Desansadero de los Muertos' in the Pilancones road or the ‘Cueva de la caja' close to Ayagaures.
